MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican state Sen. Cam Ward of Alabaster announced Monday that he's running for Alabama Supreme Court.

Ward said he will run for associate justice in 2020. This is his first run for statewide office. The seat is currently held by Justice Greg Shaw.

A prominent member of the Alabama Senate, Ward is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is best known for spearheading prison and criminal justice reform efforts and advocating for the autism community.

Samford Refuses $3M in Baptist Funding

Samford University is refusing 3 million dollars from the Alabama Baptist State Convention, reportedly due to a proposed LGBT student organization at the university.

Samford’s Board of Trustees executive committee approved the decision to refuse the $3 million budget allocation late last week after consulting with state convention leaders. The move will be effective January 1.

Democrats and Republicans made stops throughout the state of Alabama this weekend.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio made two stops, at Samford University in Birmingham and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at Miles College in Birmingham.

At the Space and Rocket Center, Rubio told the crowd he will win if he gets the nomination.

Samford University announces record-setting enrollment

Samford University has set records with the fall enrollment this year for students across undergraduate and graduate programs.

University officials announced Friday that there was an enrollment of 5,206. This is Samford's seventh consecutive record for fall enrollment, exceeding last year's mark of 4,933.

Samford President Andrew Westmoreland shared his excitement last week with employees about the start of the fall semester.

The school's fall enrollment figures include a record 826 first-year fulltime students.

Alabama is still buzzing over the news that Birmingham will be the host city for the 2021 World games. The first task in preparing to host the games will be to watch how Poland does it.

Wroclaw, Poland will be hosting the 2017 games and Alabama be taking notes on how that city handles it. Over four thousand athletes from one hundred countries usually take part.
