State Prepares for Tonight's Execution

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Attorneys for David Larry Nelson are asking the U-S Supreme Court to stop tonight's execution. Nelson is scheduled to die by lethal injection at six o'clock at Holman Prison in Atmore. His attorneys are appealing based on the method of execution, saying it would represent cruel and unusual punishment in Nelson's case. They say he has collapsed veins, and it would require a painful procedure to give him the lethal injection. U-S District Judge Myron Thompson has rejected the request, and the Eleventh U-S Circuit Court of Appeals denied it last night. Nelson was convicted of a 1978 murder in Jefferson County.
