Another City Passes Smoking Ban

By Alabama Public Radio

Auburn, AL – Another city has banned smoking in public places. The Auburn City Council passed the measure six-to-three Tuesday night. But residents have a while to make the adjustment. The new ordinance won't take effect until August first, 2005. More than 250 people attended Auburn's City Council meeting Tuesday night to find out which ordinance would pass. The council also had considered a measure that would have given business owners the right to choose whether to be completely smoke free. The decision in Auburn came just a few hours after the Dothan City Council unanimously voted to amend Dothan's smoking ordinance. The change compels local restaurants to decide if they will allow their customers to smoke. Restaurant owners in Dothan have until December first to decide whether to allow smoking and then notify the city.
