JVC Scales Back Tuscaloosa County Operations

By Alabama Public Radio

Tuscaloosa, AL – About 115 people will lose their jobs in Tuscaloosa County.
JVC America has announced it will shut down its V-H-S tape production plant by the end of January 31st. J-V-C vice president Brad Springer says the loss of the V-H-S market to DVDs forced the plant to shut down. Springer also says the company will provide severance packages and outplacement services for those laid off.
The plant opened in October 1986 to produce V-H-S cassettes and tape. The company still has compact disc and D-V-D plants in Tuscaloosa and Kennesaw, Georgia. Those plants employ about 550 employees.
