Montgomery, AL – State-run liquor stores could soon stop selling wine.
The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board has given its administrator authority to make a decision on whether the stores should continue to sell the product. Emory Folmar says more than 96 percent of the wine sold in Alabama is sold by commercial businesses. Folmar also says the Internet is threatening state wine sales. He says web sites offer more options and more information on wines.
After expenses, the state earned about 219 thousand dollars from wine sales during the last fiscal year. The Alabama Grocers Association is urging the state to get out of the wine-selling business.
