Islamic Groups Wants Drivers License Changes

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A Washington-based Islamic organization is asking Alabama officials to reconsider state policies concerning drivers license photos.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has written a letter to the state Department of Public Safety. The group asks department Director Mike Coppage to allow Muslim women to wear scarves when their I-D photo is taken. A Council spokesperson says the department is prohibiting the women from obtaining or renewing their licenses unless they remove their scarves. The scarves are worn for religious reasons.
A public safety spokesperson says the department is reviewing the matter.
