Athens, AL – The state prison system has ended the practice of segregating H-I-V positive inmates at Limestone Correctional Facility in Athens. The inmates are now being allowed to begin participating in education and vocational programs. The prisoners also are being allowed to spend time outside their dorms. The changes took effect Monday. The state corrections department began considering the change after a recent commission report. The commission, appointed by former Governor Don Siegelman, recommended admitting the prisoners into education, treatment and work programs. However, the policy reversal does not include female inmates with H-I-V. They continue to remain segregated and are not allowed to take classes at Tutwiler prison. State Prison Commissioner Donal Campbell has been asked to change Tutwiler's policies, as well.
