Key Accountability Measures Rejected

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A House committee rejected two key elements of Governor Bob Riley's accountability plan Wednesday. Committee members said they were concerned one of the measures would give a governor too much power. The House Constitution and Elections Committee rejected proposals that would have imposed term limits on legislators and would have increased the governor's authority to veto bills. Lawmakers were especially concerned about the veto legislation, which would have made it easier for a governor to kill or change legislation. Some legislators worried that would give a governor too much power to rewrite a bill or a budget, especially one with which the governor disagrees. The bills were part of Riley's plan to make government more ethical and more accountable to the public.
