Mobile School Declared Unsafe

By Alabama Public Radio

Mobile, AL – Some Mobile County students will not be able to attend classes at Allentown Elementary School until the roof is repaired. The school is only six years old, but inspectors declared it unsafe Thursday. Engineers say the roof could buckle under high winds. Beginning Monday, the 760 students from Allentown and the 550 students from nearby Semmes Elementary School will share Semmes Elementary's building. Superintendent Harold Dodge says students and teachers will rotate so that one school is there for four hours in the morning, and the other school is there for four hours in the afternoon.
