Governor Calls for Referendum on Gay Marriage

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Governor Bob Riley says state voters should get the chance to voice their opinion on the issue of gay marriage in a referendum during this fall's presidential election.
He held a press conference yesterday, where he urged the state Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriages. The measure, sponsored by Representative Gerald Allen, would hold a referendum on the matter in November. However, Democratic lawmakers are pushing legislation that would delay the referendum until 2006. Representative Ken Guin says Republicans want the referendum in November to boost President Bush's chances of winning in Alabama.
