55 Counties Under Fire Alert

By Alabama Public Radio

Tuscaloosa, AL – 55 Alabama counties have now been placed under a fire alert, as state foresters continue to battle hundreds of wildfires.
On Sunday, the Alabama Forestry Commission placed 50 southern and northeastern counties on Fire Alert ... among them Calhoun, Hale, Lowndes, Mobile and Montgomery. Five more counties were added yesterday, including Bibb, Jefferson, Shelby, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.
During a Fire Alert, forestry officials can restrict the issue of outdoor burn permits. Permit requests are considered on a case by case basis. So far this month, more than 15-thousand-five-hundred acres have burned. Most of those fire were the result of debris burning and arson.
