Governor Says Legislature Ignoring Calls For Reform

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Governor Bob Riley held a number of press conferences yesterday where he railed on some members of the Democrat-controlled Alabama Legislature, saying they are intent on raising taxes and aren't serious about reforming government.
Riley, a Republican, held news conferences yesterday in Huntsville, Montgomery, Birmingham and Mobile, where he said the Legislature is ignoring problems like rising health insurance costs for teachers and state employees. Instead, Riley says lawmakers are working on plans to raise more than 300 million dollars in new taxes. He also says the Legislature has mostly ignored his calls to reform state government.
Democratic Representative Ken Guin says the problem is a lack of communication between legislators and the governor.
