Fort Benning and Fort Stewart, GA – More Alabama National Guard personnel are expected to return from duty in Iraq this week.
About 260 soldiers from the 877th Engineer Battalion are expected to arrive at Fort Benning, Georgia, this afternoon. The 8-77th was based in Hamilton, and was one of the largest National Guard units serving in Iraq. On Wednesday, members of the 781st Transportation Company from Fort Deposit, Georgiana and Daleville are scheduled to arrive. The 781st was called to active duty 13 month ago and deployed to Iraq to haul supplies and equipment for other units.
Also, the 11-66th Military Police unit could be arriving at Fort Benning on Wednesday. The 11-66th was deployed a year ago, and was in charge of security and guarding prisoners of war.
Soldiers usually spend about a week demobilizing once they return to the US before going back to their hometowns.
