AG King Files Support Brief with U.S. Supreme Court

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The state Attorney General's Office filed a brief Monday supporting the federal government's decision to hold non-American war detainees who were captured in Afghanistan. The U-S Supreme Court will hear a case Tuesday about those who are being detained at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Two prisoners are challenging their detention, and the court must decide whether U-S courts can hear cases involving non-American detainees. In the brief, Alabama Attorney General Troy King says it's inappropriate for federal courts to second-guess the decisions of military leaders in this case. The prisoners at Guantanamo Bay were captured during a U-S-led campaign to remove the Taliban and al-Qaida from Afghanistan. Military action in the country followed the September Eleventh, 2001 terrorist attacks.
