Birmingham Air Quality Ranks Low

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The Environmental Protection Agency will announce in December which U-S cities are not clean enough to meet the U-S Clean Air Act. Birmingham may be on that list. The city's annual particle pollution average failed to meet federal standards from 2000 to 2002. The city is expected to receive a failing grade when the E-P-A makes its formal designations later this year. Meanwhile, the American Lung Association has ranked the Birmingham area sixth in the nation for dirty air. The group ranked cities by the number of days the air quality received an "unhealthy" rating.
