Campaign Targets Canadian Drugs

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A group highlighting the importation of Canadian drugs began an education campaign in Montgomery Wednesday. Despite a federal ban, the city of Montgomery purchases prescription drugs from Canada. Now, the group will begin taking its message to the rest of the state. More than 700 pharmacies statewide have begun receiving posters and fliers about less expensive imported drugs. But opponents say the Canadian drugs could be dangerous because they could come to Canada from somewhere else. Despite the controversy, U-S Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson says he believes Congress will eventually legalize imported drugs.
