Daphne, AL – A crawfish called the rusty gravedigger was feared to have been extinct. One hadn't been seen since 1990, but that changed recently. The brick-colored, two-inch long crawfish has been found in a small creek next to the Daphne sewer treatment plant. The new finding has prompted experts to believe there may be other crawfish species in the area that have not yet been discovered. Alabama and Tennessee have the nation's most diverse crawfish populations with 70 native species each. There are only four native crawfish species in all of Europe.
