Montgomery, AL – More than 30 states have raised tobacco taxes to supplement their budgets. Alabama may be among them, soon. There's a bill up for consideration next week that would generate about 90 million dollars a year. State Finance Director Drayton Nabers says the tax is the single largest revenue-raising measure being considered by the Legislature. He says the budget will not work unless the tax generates at least 80 million dollars. The current tax is 16-point-five cents per pack. The Senate has passed a bill that would add another 23 cents per pack. The House version would double the tax to 33 cents.
