One in Five Alabamians Have Bachelor's Degree

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A U-S Census survey shows roughly one of every five Alabamians has earned at least a bachelor's degree. Twenty-point-six percent of Alabamians older than 25 had a college degree in 2002. That's an increase from the previous year, but it's still among the lowest levels in the nation. Alabama ranks 44th in the country, five points below the national average. Margaret Gunter, spokesperson for the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, says that's not a surprise. Gunter says there are still many high school graduates going to universities and colleges ill-prepared for higher education.
