Congressmen Weigh In on Lapel Pin Firing

By Alabama Public Radio

Hoover, AL – Republican Congressman Spencer Bachus says it is outrageous that a former Hoover Chamber of Commerce employee was fired because he wore a Ten Commandments lapel pin. Bachus says he believes the chamber's decision is wrong and is a violation of Christopher Word's First Amendment rights. Republican Congressman Robert Aderholt agrees, saying the pin was NOT a political statement. The Hoover Chamber of Commerce fired Word because the Chamber considered the Ten Commandments pin a political symbol, not a religious one. Chamber attorney A-W Bolt says Word has openly supported former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore while at work, and that made the pin he wore a political statement.
