Group Will Consider TV in Classroom

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Interim State Schools Superintendent Joe Morton has appointed a committee to consider the pros and cons of Channel One. It's a commercial news program that's broadcast nationwide and specifically targets students. Channel One also provides schools with satellite receivers, VCRs, DVDs and televisions for the programming. Supporters say Alabama schools need the equipment. They also say the news programming stimulates classroom discussion and study. But others say the commercials promote unhealthy foods and feature violent video games and movies. Morton says he expects to discuss Channel One with the committee in June.
