Nurses Resign Over Morning-After Pill Controversy

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Nine state health department nurses have resigned over concerns about distributing emergency contraceptives at family planning clinics. They say they were required to distribute the morning-after pill, despite moral and religious objections to the drug. Health department officials say they were making accommodations for the clinic workers, and they stress that no employees have been fired for refusing to distribute the emergency contraceptives. Governor Riley says he's concerned about the distribution, and he has discussed the issue with State Health Officer Don Williamson.
