Government Proposes New Logging Plan

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – The Bush administration is proposing to remove restrictions on logging in national forests. The changes concern road building for logging projects. The federal Agriculture Department announced Monday that governors would have to petition the federal government to block road-building efforts necessary for logging. The Virginia-based Southern Environmental Law Center says the proposed changes would affect the Bankhead and Talladega National Forests in Alabama. The new plan will be published in the Federal Register this week. It will be followed by a 60-day comment period.
