State School Board Wants Students in School

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The state school board has proposed a new truancy policy that would require parents or guardians to explain every student absence. Currently there is no statewide truancy policy. But under the new plan, students or their parents could be taken to court and charged with truancy violations after seven unexcused absences. The board has unanimously approved the resolution and plans to submit the regulations to the state. The changes could take effect as early as November.
