Montgomery, AL – The Alabama State University board of trustees has rejected a settlement plan concerning teacher testing. The state school board had already approved the agreement that would end a 23-year-old federal discrimination lawsuit. An A-S-U attorney says trustees voted to do what they believe is in the best interest of Alabama State and its students. A-S-U trustees and some individual black teachers sued the state in 1981, saying teacher competency exams discriminated against blacks. State school Superintendent Joe Morton says the board's vote is unfortunate. But he says it won't stop the state school board from pursuing teacher testing.
