Birmingham Officers Will Take Stun Guns to School

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Police officers in Birmingham city schools may soon be armed with high-voltage stun guns. Birmingham superintendent Waymon Shiver says these guns are another option for officers who already employ Mace as well as pistols. Shiver says force is needed at some times when school officials aren't able to calm a child. Birmingham Police Chief Annetta Nunn has also signed off on the plan. It is optional for officers to carry the guns that have a range of up to 21 feet. Officers who do want to carry the guns must go through a four-hour training session and experience the jolt of the stun themselves. Some parents have expressed concerns.
