By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A new report on child welfare in the state gives a county-by-county ranking. In the annual survey of child well-being, Shelby County ranks at the top of the list...Greene County at the bottom. The survey was conducted by the Montgomery-based nonprofit group VOICES for Alabama. VOICES spokeswoman Linda Tilly says the survey shows the gap between rich and poor Alabama families. She says children in more affluent counties tend to fare better, while those in poorer counties don't do as well. Shelby County has a median family income of about 64 thousand dollars...compared to Greene County's almost 25 thousand. Tilly says Alabama ranked 47th this year in the national report on child welfare.
