FEMA Will Pay for Damage Cleanup in Three Counties

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay all of the costs associated with cleaning up debris left by Hurricane Ivan. That guarantee, however, only applies in three south Alabama counties -- Mobile, Escambia and Butler. Governor Bob Riley says he met with FEMA officials, and the agency agreed to pay for the full cost of debris removal for county and city governments in those counties. There was some initial confusion about who would pay for debris removal. Riley first said FEMA would pay 100 percent of the cost if cleanup began before September 19th. FEMA officials later said that was NOT the case and Riley attributed the confusion to ``a misunderstanding.''
