AmSouth Bank Fined $10M

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The federal government has fined Birmingham-based AmSouth Bank 10 million dollars. The Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department disclosed the penalty Tuesday. The government accuses AmSouth of violating rules that prevent money laundering. AmSouth has agreed to pay the fine, but the bank has neither admitted to nor denied the accusation. Government regulators say AmSouth did not set up an adequate anti-money laundering program, and they say it also failed to file accurate reports involving suspicious financial transactions. The Federal Reserve Board and the Alabama superintendent of banks are also requiring AmSouth and its parent, AmSouth Bancorporation, to make corrections.
