Monsanto Agrees to Settle Class-Action Suit

By Alabama Public Radio

Shelby County, AL – An Anniston chemical plant has agreed to pay six million dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit by Shelby County property owners. Lay Lake owners sued Monsanto, alleging property damage from the pollution of the Lake. They say PCBs drifted down the Coosa River after being discharged into Snow Creek by the company. Monsanto acknowledged no liability in agreeing to settle the case. Attorneys say the class action suit could include about three-thousand people. PCBs are chemicals considered to be a cause of cancer. The lawsuit was originally filed in 1997.
