CullmanCo Voters Could Change Blue Laws

By Alabama Public Radio

Cullman, AL – Cullman County residents will have the chance to vote for an amendment on November second that will allow businesses to open on Sundays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The current local blue law allows most retail stores to open only from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Amendment opponents say people need the day off to attend church or be with their families, but supporters say they need the extra day for shopping. Blue laws were common throughout Alabama until the 1970s and 80s when court challenges, law changes and consumer complaints wiped out or relaxed many of them. Officials say no other county still enforces laws that limit Sunday business hours.
