Amendment Would Empower Some Counties

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Alabama voters will decide whether 20 counties should have the power to pay incentives to attract large corporations. Amendment Three is on the November Second ballot and is among several proposed amendments. Alabama's constitution currently prohibits local governments from providing money, buildings, equipment or land to private businesses. Governor Bob Riley is asking voters to approve it. Critics, however, say it got through the legislature by trickery and voters should reject it. There is also a lawsuit challenging the proposal, and it's pending in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
