Tarrant, AL – Federal and state agencies are trying to determine what caused a 70-thousand gallon storage tank to rupture Tuesday and spill more than five-thousand gallons of sulfuric acid. It happened at Sloss Industries in Tarrant. A company spokesman says no one was injured, and no evacuations were ordered. Alabama Department of Environmental Management spokesperson Lynn Garthwright says most of the acid was contained by dikes around the tanks, but some still seeped through concrete at the facility and into the ground. She also says none of the acid is believed to have leaked into nearby Five Mile Creek. Sulfuric acid is a clear liquid that is corrosive and can turn to a gas.
