Cullman Voters Amend City's Blue Law

By Alabama Public Radio

Cullman, AL – Stores and businesses in Cullman can now open on Sunday mornings. With 97 percent of precincts reporting, voters in the north Alabama city decided to amend its blue law and let businesses open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sundays. Previously, they could only open from 1 to 6 p.m. The so-called blue laws were common throughout Alabama until the 1970s and 1980s. Tuesday's unofficial returns showed voters approved the extended hours by a 59 to 41 percent margin. District Attorney Len Brooks says the stores can begin operating under the new law immediately. In a separate vote Tuesday, Cullman residents also voted against legalizing the sale of alcoholic beverages.
