Democrat Leaders Calling for New Chairman

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's top four Democratic leaders are calling for the replacement of state Democratic Party Chairman Redding Pitt. Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley, Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, House Speaker Seth Hammett and Senate President Pro Tem Lowell Barron have signed a statement saying that the current chairman does not serve the best interest of Democratic candidates. The statement calls for different leadership for the 2006 election cycle. The four are asking the state Democratic Executive Committee to meet next month to elect a new state chairman. Pitt, meanwhile, says he will not step down. He says he plans to serve the remainder of his term, which runs until January 2007.
