Rice Nominated as Secretary of State

Washington, DC – Dr. Condoleeza Rice may be switching roles for President Bush's next term. The Alabama native was nominated Tuesday as Secretary of State. Bobby Puppione reports.

"Mr. President, it is an honor to be asked to serve your administration and my country once again."

Condoleeza Rice had tears in her eyes as she accepted President Bush's nomination. She will be the first African American woman to serve as Secretary of State. President Bush says as Rice was growing up she saw the promise of America violated by discrimination and hate.

"But she was taught by her mother Angelena and her father, the reverend John Rice, that human dignity is the gift of God. And that the ideals of America would overcome oppression."

Dr. Rice was born in Birmingham on November 14, 1954. Her mother was a music teacher and her father was a minister at Westminster Presbyterian Church. U-S Senator Jeff Sessions says he is proud of Rice.

"She's won the respect of people in Congress and I just couldn't be more thrilled for our native Alabamian."

Her nomination must be confirmed by the Senate before she takes office.

For the Alabama Report, I'm Bobby Puppione.
