Tariffs May Be Placed on Imported Shrimp

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – The federal Commerce Department will announce Tuesday whether punitive tariffs will be imposed on shrimp imports from China and Vietnam. Southern shrimpers and processors say cheap, farm-raised shrimp has been illegally dumped on the U-S market. They say that has hurt the domestic shrimp market. The Bush administration also has proposed tariffs on shrimp from Brazil, Ecuador, India and Thailand. A decision on tariffs for those countries may be decided by the end of the year. In all, the six countries targeted for tariffs provide about 75 percent of the shrimp Americans eat.
