I 20/59 Scheduled to Reopen Saturday

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The newly repaired Interstate 20/59 bridge in Birmingham is expected to open Saturday, almost a month ahead of schedule. Contractors The Morris Group and Brasfield and Gorrie expect to finish work Friday. That's 28 days ahead of their deadline and one day ahead of a record set in 2002 when they built a shorter, similar bridge on I-65. The contractors will split an incentive bonus of at least $1.3 million. Governor Riley is expected to officially open the roadway to traffic at 10 a.m. Saturday. Traffic analysts say about 245,000 vehicles travel through the state's busiest interchange every day.
