County Jails House More State Prisoners

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – County jails are becoming crowded with state prisoners again. State Corrections Department spokesperson Brian Corbett says efforts are being made make more room in state prisons. But, he says the state also is considering paying counties to allow the prisoners to stay. But some sheriffs say they would not agree to that. Corbett says there are 192 state inmates in county jails who already should have been moved to state prisons. The corrections system says that number has risen recently because paroles have leveled off and the state brought back inmates who had been serving their time out of state.
