Historic Home Will Be Torn Down

By Alabama Public Radio

Florence, AL – A home believed to be the oldest brick house in Florence is scheduled to be torn down. A local developer plans to use the site for an apartment complex for the elderly. City historian Bill McDonald says the home is believed to have been built by one Florence's earliest settlers. He says it even served as a house of ill repute from the 1870s to around 1900. A recent study of the city's historic structures determined the house and its surroundings would not be appropriate for the National Historic Register. Heritage Preservation president Billy Ray Warren says it appears nothing will be done to save the house.
