Montgomery, AL – A state legislator has submitted a bill that would alter the state's constitutional amendment process. Representative Linda Coleman's legislation would eliminate statewide votes for constitutional amendments that only effect one city or county. Current law requires local amendments to pass in the local area and in a statewide vote. But Coleman says some recent cases where amendments passed in the local area but failed statewide. In November, a proposed amendment would have established a local school system in Trussville. The measure passed locally but failed on the statewide wide.
