Rudolph's Defense Challenges Claims

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Newly released court papers reveal Eric Robert Rudolph's defense team is challenging more government claims. They reject the idea proposed by prosecutors that Rudolph planned to become a fugitive after the 1998 abortion clinic bombing in Birmingham. Rudolph's lawyers say he would have taken more provisions if he had planned to spend five years hiding in North Carolina's woods. The defense also is denying authorities' claims that they knew Rudolph intended to disappear because of the condition of his trailer. Defense attorneys say Rudolph's trailer door was open, the lights were on and food was on the table. Rudolph's bombing trial is scheduled to begin in the spring.
