Bham Could Reinstate No Pass, No Play

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Birmingham school Superintendent Waymon Shiver says he'll recommend that the board of education reinstate its no pass, no play policy this fall. If that policy is re-enacted, schools would use grades that are earned during the last six-week grading period of this spring to determine students' eligibility to participate in fall sports and extracurricular activities. Students will be able to attend summer school to make up for failed core classes. The board suspended its no pass, no play policy last fall when coaches complained about dozens of students who would have been benched for football season under the board's standards. The policy says that students who do not pass every class and maintain at least a 70 average cannot participate in extracurricular activities.
