Montgomery, AL – A new poll shows former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore leading Governor Riley in a hypothetical race for the 2006 Republican gubernatorial nomination. Moore has said he's not yet decided whether he'll run for the state's highest office. But the poll says he does have a lead of eight percentage points over the Governor if there was a primary match-up. Moore had 43 percent support from respondents, while the Governor had 35 percent. The Mobile Register-University of South Alabama poll was conducted last week. Interviewers talked with 400 likely Republican primary voters. Moore was removed from the Alabama Supreme Court because of his refusal to follow a federal judge's order to take a 10 Commandments monument out of the court building. The former chief justice has been traveling the country since his removal, speaking to conservative organizations and religious groups.
