Shorter, AL – The Alabama Co-operative Extension System wants more cotton farmers to begin growing peanuts.
Alabama Extension agent Jeff Clary says the push for more peanut growers is driven by a worldwide increase in cotton production and a growing problem with damaging cotton pests.
Clary says nationally, there was a surplus of 6 million bales of cotton last year. Meanwhile, peanuts are selling for a hefty 400-dollars a ton. The Extension system will host a public meeting on Monday to discuss the peanut-cotton issue. The meeting begins at 6 o-clock at the EV Smith Farm near Shorter.
