Bham Pledges More Support for Domed Stadium

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham City Council has approved a resolution to support a domed convention center and entertainment complex. The council approved the nonbinding resolution Tuesday. Mayor Bernard Kincaid says the resolution signals an intent to double the city's 30-year, $5 million annual commitment to the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. The BJCC authority needs about $28 million a year to pay for bonds to finance the $567 million project. Officials so far have locked down only $13 million in yearly funding. Officials say they need more money and support from cities, counties and the state. The resolution does say the city must resolve a legal disagreement with the BJCC concerning taxes and user fees. The resolution also says the city must have the money in place before it can be obligated.
