Anniston, AL – Officials at the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility say a new category of weapons could be destroyed this week, with the destruction of the facility's stockpile of eight-inch shells almost complete. Crews are reworking machinery to accept 155 millimeter artillery shells. The Army's Chemical Materials Agency oversees the weapons destruction at Anniston. Spokesperson Mike Abrams says the disposal has been going smoothly. Abrams says the agency will start to retool for a new agent campaign toward the end of the year. The facility, to date, has destroyed more than 56,000 weapons, almost 43,000 rockets and warheads and more than 13,000 eight-inch artillery shells as well as almost 600,000 pounds of sarin.
