Legislature Adjourns Without General Fund Budget

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The state legislature has finished this year's regular legislative session. But, lawmakers didn't get the job done. They will have to come back for a special session this summer. The legislature adjourned at Monday night, but the Senate never voted on a state General Fund budget. That budget provides money to operate the state's non-education programs. Governor Bob Riley will have to set the date for the special session. The Legislature did override the governor's vetoes of the education budget and a six percent pay raise for teachers. Those bills will take effect for the upcoming school year.
