Scottsboro, AL – Scottsboro's Mayor says a 102-year-old tradition will not die on his watch. Mayor Dan Deason is a First Monday supporter. But the Scottsboro Tourism Advisory Board has recommended that the monthly event be discontinued -- except during the three-day Labor Day weekend in September. First Monday was established to promote business and good fellowship around the courthouse square. It's often described as a unique blend of yard sale, antique show and flea market. But the tourism board told the city council that competition and loss of vendor space has contributed to First Monday's waning popularity. The tradition started in 1902 as Horse Swapper's Day. The event is held on the weekend before the first Monday of each month.
