Bham Water Rates Going Up

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham Water Works Board has unanimously voted to raise water rates by 6.5 percent. Officials say the additional money will help the system plan for the future. The hikes will take effect July 1. Board officials say the increase will cost an average family of four an additional $1.62 per month. Board chair Anthony Barnes says the increase was needed. He says the board is not arbitrarily or maliciously raising rates. Board members also say another increase of 8.75 percent is planned for next year, along with a 7.75 increase the following year. The board estimates this latest increase will bring an additional $3 million in revenue this year alone.
